Speech by Prime Minister, Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak for Malaysia Green Forum 2010 at Sri Siantan Conference hall, Putrajaya (April 26, 2010)

Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak said his presence here allows the government with an opportunity to reiterate its resounding commitment towards environmental sustainability in the country. The forum’s aim of establishing an action‐oriented network that deals with environmental issues in a holistic manner is indeed refreshing and most welcomed.

According to Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak, We are one of the earliest nations in the world to have adopted a serious concern towards our environment by enacting the Environment Quality Act way back in 1974. Likewise the very concept of sustainability was an integral part of our Third Malaysia Plan, even before the idea of Sustainable Development was popularized in the late eighties by the Brundtland Report. In this regard, he would like to recognize the critical contribution by Yang Amat Berbahagia Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi for bringing together 14 agencies from 4 different ministries when he established the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in 2004 that paved the way for a more comprehensive and cohesive approach in tackling environmental issues.

Indeed, the government has consistently affirmed its commitment to environmental

sustainability over the years and I pledge to continue this throughout my administration. Only

six days after taking office, i announced the formation of the Ministry of Energy, Green

Technology and Water. The government continues to take cognizance of the growing need and urgency of green technology towards sustainable development. Hence the National Green

Technology Policy was launched last year, just 106 days after the setting up of the said ministry. A technical arm called The National Green Technology Center also came to being through a restructuring exercise of the then Malaysia Energy Centre. He said.

Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak would like to praise the organizers of Malaysia Green Forum 2010 for taking the initiative to organize this noble conference. Aleutian Islands, a strong earthquake hit Aleutian Islands Sunday night.

Alaska Tsunami Warning Center reported it measured 6.6 on Richter scale and shook three Aleutian Island fishing villages, Nikolski, Dutch Harbor and Unalaska, for three minutes. Richter scale measures ground motion and is recorded on seismographs; each increase of one number means a tenfold increase in magnitude; example, 7.5 is 10 times greater than 6.5.  It was epicenter in the North Pacific about 40 miles east of the village of Nikolski and 850 miles southwest of Anchorage.

There were no physical injuries or major damage from the strong quake. "There was some very minor damage at Nikolski, with items knocked off shelves and small items damaged." Source: George Carts.

Carts said the quake was felt strongly in the towns of Unalaska, Dutch Harbor and Nikolski. These three fishing villages are located on western islands in the Aleutian chain.

The earthquake of 6.6 magnitude can cause severe damage if it hits populated areas but luckily Aleutians are sparsely settled when quake hit at 7:01 p.m. PST

About 20 aftershocks; one measured 5.0 on the scale. None was powerful enough to cause a tsunami, officials said.  

Lorry driver awakened by gunshots

KLANG: Two gunmen on a motorcycle fired several shots in the direction of a lorry driver's house in Taman Sri Andalas Sunday.

The incident occurred at 6.15am, when lorry driver P. Muthusamy, 55, was asleep in the house in Jalan Tun Razak.

Klang (South) police chief ACP Mohamad Mat Yusop said Muthusamy was initially awakened by the sound of gunshots in front of the house.

He said the lorry driver told the police that when he opened the main door two gunmen on a black Yamaha RXZ motorcycle fired two more shots at the house before escaping.

A police team found two bullet holes on the front door where two glass frames were broken.

The police also found six spent bullets outside the perimeter fence of the house. - Bernama

Four-year-old boy burnt to death

IPOH: A four-year-old boy was burned to death when fire destroyed his house in Slim River here Friday.

Firemen found the charred remains of Muhammad Shahrizal Abdullah in the living room of the house in Kampung Lintah Tiong, Slim Village after the blaze was put out.

The remains were sent to the Slim River Hospital.

Slim River Fire and Rescue Department station chief  Md Zin Mohd Saaidin said the fire broke out at 2.30pm.

He said the victim was alone in the living room at the time of the fire.

Muhammad Shahrizal's mother, Norlia Zakaria, 51, and his five siblings who were in the kitchen, managed to save themselves. - Bernama

17-year-old suspect in shooting of cops surrenders

KUALA LUMPUR: A second suspect believed to be involved in the recent shootout with two policemen at Jalan Kuchai Lama surrendered to the police.

City CID chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Ku chin wah said the 17-year-old turned up at the Sentul police station at about 11am Monday.

It is learnt that the teenager from Kepong was accompanied by his girlfriend and had been remanded to facilitate police investigations.

Police sources revealed that they were looking for one more suspect involved in the incident.

He said all of the suspects were related and had previous criminal records for robbery and drugs.

The suspect was with among two people who shot two policemen on Wednesday at Jalan Kuchai Lama, injuring Kpl Nor Azlan Abu Bakar, 42, and Kpl R. Subramaniam, 52, who approached their car at a traffic light.

On Sunday, one of the suspects was killed following a shoot out with the police.

Two women sentenced to death for drugs in Malaysia

Malaysian courts has sentenced two women, a Filipino and Indonesian, to death in separate cases of drug trafficking, reports said on Saturday.

Ani Anggraeni, an Indonesian working in the northern state of Penang as a domestic helper, was convicted on Friday of trafficking nearly four kilos of methamphetamine on June 21 last year, The Star newspaper reported.

She had testified she went to see her daughter in Vietnam and met a friend “Dwi” who asked her to carry two bags on her flight to Penang, to be passed to another friend. “Her story makes no sense and I don’t think her friend ‘Dwi’ even exists,” the English daily quoted the judge, Mohd Amin Firdaus Abdullah, as saying.

Man arrested for offensive Facebook post on Islam

KLANG, Sept 26 — Police arrested a 25-year-old man today at his house in Taman Klang Jaya, here, to help with investigations into offensive comments on Islam and Prophet Muhammad that appeared on Facebook recently.

“The suspect, however, denied making the insulting posting on the social network through a police report he lodged at the Klang South district police headquarters last night.

“He also claimed that he had lost a computer laptop before,” he told reporters, here, today.

The suspect in his latest comment on Facebook claimed that his account had been hacked by irresponsible quarters and that he had never wanted to insult any religion in this country.

Student dies, two injured in head-on collision
KUANTAN: 28th sept, A form five student was killed when the motorcycle he was riding, collided head-on with a lorry at the 17km Jalan Baru Bentong-Raub early Saturday.

Mohamad Zaidi Ahmad, 17, who sustained head injuries in the 6.44am crash, died on the way to the Bentong Hospital. His friend, Mohd Hafifi Jamaludin, 17, who was riding pillion, and the lorry driver, M. Murugiah, 61, sustained head and body injuries.

They have been warded at the hospital.

Moderate quake hits Nicobar Islands

KUALA LUMPUR: 28th Sept, A moderate earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale jolted the Nicobar Islands in the Indian Ocean region at 7.24 pm Saturday.

The epicentre of the earthquake was 142km southwest of Great Nicobar and 785km southwest of Langkawi, Kedah, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department in a statement Saturday. - Bernama
